Work-at-Home: Online Work and Business Opportunities Part 2

In the previous articles, we have discussed about the benefits and privileges, as well as the disadvantages, of working-at-home. This time, we will talk about the steps on how to finally start your online employment or business as well as the different online job and enterprise opportunities you can engage in for your make-money-online strategy.

Here are the basic requirements for every online worker; the list will be longer once you have decided the specific method for working at home:

  • A computer and a postpaid internet connection. Never mind if it’s a desktop PC or a laptop, what’s important is that your computer is in good working condition, good enough memory storage and not constantly “hanging” or infected with terrible computer viruses. It’s a must that you use postpaid broadband services, preferably those with “unlimited hours” package, as you will be spending a lot of time online.
  • An email and chat account. Online workers and employers usually exchange correspondence through emails and at times, through chat (preferred chat service for business is Skype). You must have onebusiness email for your correspondence with a professional-sounding name such as your initials or semi-full name.
  • An account with online payment processor. The usual payment scheme for online jobs is PayPal where you can create an account for free where you will need to have an email account for signing up. It is recommended that the email account you will sign up with PayPal should not be used for registering with online networking sites and services you would register with in the future so there’s less chance of the account being hacked used by identity thefts.

From the technical aspect, let’s move on to the behavioral and attitudinal requisites if you wanted to become successful in your potential online career:

  • Positive Attitude. Work hard, think positively and hope for the best. Everything starts with a positive attitude.
  • Motivation and Self-Discipline. A motivated person works diligently and generates outputs. Online jobs are performance-based, you need to produce results in order for you to get paid or earn money. You’ve got to be motivated and disciplined to pull yourself together towards working when all you wanted to do is take a nap, play with the kids, or watch television.
  • Define your Goals and Focus. You may create short-term and long-term goals. The important thing is to focus on steps and approaches you will employ to reach your goals. Focus on strategies you will decide to adapt, remain with them and not change them quickly and constantly when you learn of a new money-making program.
  • Creativity. Try to think out of the box. Encourage yourself to be creative so you can recreate ideas already presented by others. Be resourceful in
  • Be friendly. Many online marketers, bloggers, entrepreneurs, started their online stint from encouragement of people from the online industry, may they be acquaintances or strangers. You will learn for free from online people by being friendly to them and by asking questions and concerns politely when visiting their websites.
  • Willingness to learn. Every work-at-home person started from knowing nothing or so little. You’ll learn as you go along. You may be “html code illiterate” at this point but you can still start a blogsite of your own. Even if you are “technically dumb,” there are ways by which you can uplift your techy wisdom by going through tutorials and reading articles written by seasoned bloggers, search engine optimization (SEO) experts, andwork-at-home practitioners.

Next step is establishing your desired work schedule. Decide how much time you can actually spend doing an online work – a full eight-hour, five-day work, a few hours during the day, a few hours during the week, or a few hours during night-time.

To finally make up your mind about the kind of online work you will engage in, here is the list of the top work at-home opportunities:

  • Content or Article Writing for authority websites, blog sites onlinemagazines. Content writing is a good job for people who love time flexibility as usually, they are paid by the hour or per project/article.  Remember that online writers too must abide by the law of plagiarism, your published contents must be unique and not copy-paste from other sites. Good content writers are sought for and are paid good money.
  • Blogging.    The term blog came from the words web and log. Wikipedia defines it as “a type of website or part of a website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video.” Bloggers may either maintain their own website and monetize (term for making money from an activity such as blogging) it, or writes on other blogs, may it be for a company, group or individual, and get paid for it.
  • Data Entry or Data Encoding. Typing jobs are easier these days through the use of computer. Companies are outsourcing the typing jobs to freelance data encoders to save on cost since hiring regular employees entails benefits such as social security insurance, health and medical insurance and bonuses.
  • Becoming a Virtual Assistant. The job of a virtual assistant (VA) ranges from clerical to technical to administrative. A VA is like a personal assistant who does variety of jobs he/she agreed upon with the online employer. Employment may be part-time or full-time.
  • Web Designing and Development. If you know how to design and develop websites using real codes and not creating one using blog platform such as wordpress or blogger, then you’re the man for the job! Usually, payment for web designer and developers are on per contract basis.
  • Selling and Reselling Online. The popularity of online shops and mall is ever increasing as more and more people are loving the convenience of shopping through the internet and having their orders delivered in the comfort of their homes. People sell online because of its tax benefits since the government is kinder to work-at-home workers and because you can actually run a store without having to buy or rent a land and a building for your office, warehouse and actual store.
  • Freelance Customer Service, Technical Support, or Medical Transcriptionist. There are companies which provide call center services and outsourcing support for large corporations and there is preference for freelance workers as they will be saving a lot for doing so. No need to build offices, purchase office equipment and pay bonuses and other social security benefits.

Work-at-Home: Online Work and Business Opportunities Part I

The number of women, and even men, deciding to work-at-home is ever increasing. Home-based businesses and employment are now being considered the growth industry of the future. Over the years, the number of US individuals and groups engaging in home-based businesses are rapidly increasing.

In 1996, Money Magazine conducted a survey and learned that 20 percent (20%) of home-based businesses had a yearly gross income of $100,000 to half a million  dollars while Newsweek Magazine anticipates more than five years ago that about half of the households in the US will be engaged in a home-based business which Entrepreneur magazine estimates to be generate $427 billion every year.

More and more people are opting to work and conduct business at home because of the many benefits it offers especially for parents who just can’t leave their children at home with nannies. Here are the top reasons of people for choosing work-at-home versus working in a formal office:

  • Saving on Transportation Cost and Time. About 10% of a working person’s time is spent on transportation to and fro home. That is if she/he lives a little close to the workplace. At the same time, a good amount of allowance is set aside for transportation, either on gas and parking, or on bus/train and taxi fare. If you work-at-home, you’ll save all. You’ll have more time to sleep more in the morning and even stay later in the evening for leisure activities using the money you saved from the transportation cost.
  • Saving on office food expenses. A good chunk of the salary goes to food allowance especially if you work in area where eateries and cheap restaurants are not found. Many try to save by packing lunch but these are usually haphazardly packed instant food that are unhealthy and not appetizing anymore when cold.
  • Working flexibly at your convenience. One of the best benefits of working at home is that you get to choose your own work time. You may choose to work for full 8 hours a day or a couple of hours a day, it’s your call. In fact, there are online employers who even allow their workers to work on their own time and pace.  You are not bound by the usual eight hours, five to six days a week work. It’s very favorable for parents who babysit their children daily, for people who can’t wake up early to go to the office, and for those who love traveling and going out but need some cash to keep their finances afloat.
  • Spending more time with family. What’s better than making money while staying at home with your family? You can organize events, sell stuff all over the world, and type the day away, in the confines of your own home, while playing and joking around with your children, and spending lovely, bonding time with them.
  • Saving money from health cost. When you are working far from home, you may catch some bug or virus from people in the transit or in the workplace. Getting sick means medicines, doctor’s checkup and worse, hospitalization. Staying at home is staying in a safe environment where there’s a lesser chance to get sick.
  • Productivity and talent equals money. Unlike in many offices, chances of getting an increase and promotion depend on the management which at times, is hindered by office politics. When working at home, the more hours and the better output you produce would be equal to money.
  • More control with your working environment. Undesirable working environment causes stress. These may include politics, unhealthy competition, rumors and crab mentality. You can eliminate all of these in a work-at-home setup.
  • More time for personal activities and for self- improvement. Mothering and working at the same time gives a lot of toil to a woman that she would in the process stop enjoying her own life and forgets about herself, her own career and her need for continuous self-improvement. Working from home allows her a good time to enjoy all of these.

As in all other jobs, not all is good about working from home. Let’s look at the other side of the coin and find out what could be the hassles and disadvantages of this make-money strategy:

  • The pay may not be consistent. Many work-at-home schemes are freelance work, others work per contract or per project. This way, the pay become inconsistent which may pose a problem to people who need to regularly pay bills, loans, and settle financial obligations.
  • No work certificate. This could be a problem if you wanted to avail for a bank loan or a home mortgage as you would need to present proof of income or proof of employment.
  • No work, no pay. Unlike regular working employees, absences are paid through leave credits. For work-at-home, you don’t get paid if you get sick or can’t work for some time.
  • No benefits, no regularization. Unlike regular employees, you don’t get bonuses, health cards, backpay or social security pension.
  • Isolated work setup. You are on your own. You won’t belong in a team of people working for the common purpose. You won’t get invites to seminars or trainings, office parties and events. This somehow limits your potential for expanding your network for business purposes.
